Health and Safety Lead
Project summary
In July 2024, GMIN acquired the Oko West project. The Oko West project is a new gold discovery in northwestern Guyana. It is located south of the historic gold district "Oko", about 95 km west of Georgetown.
Summary of the Mandate
We are looking for an experienced individual to lead, implement, monitor and continuously improve health and safety programs to ensure a safe work environment in accordance with company policies, legal regulations and mining industry best practices.
 Working conditions
- Position based on the OKO project site.
- Rotating work schedule, variable according to the place of residence of the successful candidate, generally 22 days worked and 19 days off.
- 11-hour working days per day on site.
- Transportation, accommodation and meals provided on site.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate all health and safety activities on site and ensure compliance with local and international policies, procedures, regulations, as well as company guidelines.
- Have a thorough knowledge of OSHA and/or MSHA standards.
- Conduct risk assessments, workplace inspections and task hazard analyses; implement effective controls for the construction and operation phases of the mine.
- Develop, implement and monitor health and safety training programs for all employees and contractors.
- Investigate incidents, accidents and near-misses; write reports and ensure the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor compliance with PPE requirements, standard operating procedures, and safety management systems for the construction and operation phases.
- Collect, analyze and present HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) indicators and trends for site management and corporate reporting.
- Lead on-site emergency preparedness planning and exercises.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities during inspections, audits and investigations.
- Advise management on regulatory changes and ensure that the site remains compliant.
- Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership, daily talks and ongoing employee engagement.
- Manage the site's occupational health programs, including medical surveillance, fitness-for-duty programs and wellness initiatives.
- Participate in environmental monitoring related to worker safety (e.g., dust, noise, vibrations).
- Conduct site visits and implement corrective measures.
- Develop practical solutions with the execution team to perform complex tasks.
- Be comfortable with self-building concepts as an integrated team.
Requirements
- Degree in occupational health and safety, environmental science, mining engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of health and safety experience, preferably in the mining industry, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.
- Expertise in incident investigation and risk assessment.
- Excellent communication, leadership and coaching skills.
