Health and Safety Coordinator – Construction Project

Summary of Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Project Director and Construction Director, the incumbent acts as a health and safety contact person with the project team and the client. In a support and coordination role, they assist managers, supervisors, contractors, and other stakeholders in the application and compliance with the health and safety requirements, procedures and standards established by the client. While not assuming overall governance of the project’s health and safety program, the Health and Safety Coordinator actively contributes to the identification of risks, monitoring actions and promoting a safe work environment to ensure a safe workspace for all workers and teams on site. More specifically, the coordinator will be called upon to:

• Assist managers and supervisory teams in identifying hazards, assessing risks associated with construction activities, and implementing preventive measures in accordance with the client’s procedures and requirements.
• Support the client and project teams in the day-to-day application of health and safety policies, procedures, standards, and requirements applicable to the construction site, and report any observed non-compliance to the appropriate personnel.
• Participate in the onboarding, orientation, and health and safety awareness training of employees and contractors, in accordance with the client established training programs, tools and content.
• Assist teams in the process of reporting and analyzing incidents, near-misses, and high-risk situations; helping to identify causes and following up on corrective actions within the project team’s purview.
• Conduct site visits, inspections, and preventive observations to identify conditions or behaviours at risk, document findings and collaborate with relevant managers to follow up on required actions.
• Support the implementation of client emergency response plans and procedures and assist, as needed, in the preparation and coordination of related drills, communications, and awareness activities.
• Maintain and compile health and safety documentation and records required for activities under GMS’ responsibility, including inspections, observations, training, incidents, corrective actions and performance indicators, in accordance with project requirements.
• Help promote a prevention culture by sharing best practices, client expectations, lessons learned, and relevant health and safety information with project teams.
• Participate in safety meetings, “toolbox” discussions, coordination meetings and other prevention activities, and assist supervisors in preparing for or facilitating these events as needed.
• Collaborate with the client, contractors and various project disciplines to identify opportunities for improvement, facilitate the resolution of health and safety issues, and follow up on agreed-upon actions, within the scope of GMS’ mandate.
• Support the monitoring of contractor and sub-contractor health and safety performance by observing on‑site practices, reporting non-conformities to the responsible parties, and promoting compliance with established project requirements and best practices.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree in occupational health and safety or a related field.
• At least five (5) years of relevant experience in the construction and heavy industry sectors.
• Experience in mining construction projects is a significant asset.
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian health and safety regulations.
• Knowledge of Greek regulations is considered an asset.
• Proficiency with safety software and tools.
• Knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Valid first aid and CPR certification.
• Professional proficiency in English (comprehension, written and oral).

Additional Information

• Contract expected until end of December 2026 with possibility of extension or assignment to another project depending on the organization’s needs.
• Fly-in, fly-out position on a 22-20 rotation.
• Work schedule: 11 hours per day, 12 hours on-site.
